How does a Plein Air  Event work?  This is a growing phenomena and the public and artists have found it intriguing, fun and educational.  Artist’s convene in the host area, in this case, an area that is in or within an eight mile radius of Durand, WI. The artist compete but at the same time enjoy each others camaraderie.  A professional artist, Derek Davis, in this case, is invited to come to the event, and to do a demo for the artists. This year, Derek will be demonstrating How to Paint a Nocturne, something at which he is especially skilled.  On Friday, the sixth day of painting, the artists submit up to four paintings for judging and potential awards.  The awards last year included:  Best of Show, Best Chippewa River Painting, Best Nocturne, Best Quick Paint as well as a number of Honorable Mentions.  The top places receive cash awards.   In addition the public pledges purchase awards.  A purchase award is a promise to purchase some art from the registered participating artists exhibit. This encourages the artists and ensures that their week of painting will result in some income for their labor. Just following the awards ceremony on Friday evening, those who’ve pledged purchase awards have first choice from the artist’s works.  A third of the purchase award is also donated to Imagination Nation, Inc, a non-profit organization hosting Fresh Paint.
